In the last year, I have made a commitment to my health and fitness. This change was spurred on by low energy, an unwelcome appearance in the mirror, and most importantly by disturbing data on blood tests during a routine physical.
I had been fairly consistent attending regular kickboxing classes, but what I was not doing was eating clean and healthy or drinking enough water. So, I started with cutting out refined sugar and processed foods, which eventually led to eating clean overall. I focus on fruits and vegetables, lean meats and hearty grains. The final change I made was increasing my hydration to an average of 96 ounces per day. All of this put together has helped me drop a life-changing 55 pounds and add more lean muscle.
There have been ups and downs and challenges along the way, but I have kept my end goal in mind. I think the hardest part of the journey was the elimination of sugar and sweets because I was absolutely addicted to sugar. The first couple weeks of eliminating sugar was physically difficult due to withdrawal symptoms like headaches and lack of energy and mentally draining because of the pleasure I derived from eating these sugary sweets. However, once I got past the first couple weeks, I began to feel better because I was eliminating toxins from my body and fueling it with nutritious foods. The benefits to my body, including normal blood counts and a clean bill of health about six months in, made the journey completely worth it.
What am I most proud of? Clean eating, exercise, and hydration have become an integral part of my daily life. It is not something I do, it is all part of who I am.
My fitness journey has changed my life. I am lighter both literally and metaphorically. I feel strong, energetic and able to conquer anything. The journey will continue as I strive to learn more about healthy eating, cardiovascular fitness and building more muscle mass. Clean eating, hydration and kickboxing is a recipe for success!
